The Atomic Bait was founded in 1950 by Ted Suwall. Purchased in 1953 by Dale Liechti. Throughout the years the popularity of the bait grew. In 1998 due to increasing health problems, Dale closed up shop. In August of 2001 Gary and Ruth McDonald, through the help of Dale's son, started the procedures for purchasing the Atomic Bait. After many meetings the Atomic Bait was purchased and brought it back to the shelves of the bait stores. Gary has also added his own Atomic Baits to the list, such as Mac's Atomic X and the Atomic Dip Bait.
